64 Miniatures for Piano
The title Reflections alludes to different aspects of these piano pieces. On the one hand most of them are meditative miniatures; on the other hand, several of them reflect older music from occidental or oriental traditions: sometimes more abstractly by delving into the inner essence of a particular tradition and sometimes more externally “mirrored”.
The latter case is deliberately forced upto the border of stylistic imitation in some of the 64 miniatures, whereby the historical point of reference might be in the 19th century (Brahms in No. 38) or in the 20th (Messiaen in No. 21, Schoenberg in No. 23, Stravinsky in No. 62, or Phillip Glass in No. 57). In other miniatures, non-European music traditions are echoed – for example in Nos. 6, 14, or 44. Occasionally personal experiences are also reflected: emotions, mental states and moods as well as impressions of the outside world (for instance cold winter weather in No. 23 or a rain shower in No. 47).
Nevertheless, the single piano pieces were left untitled, for ultimately they represent “Thinking in Music”; therefore in essence these miniatures are ment to be absolute. Also the listening experience should not be restricted or steered in specific directions by titles. Thus the listener can give his associations free rein or simply LISTEN with open ears.
