Wilhelm Petersen (1890-1957) wrote three string quartets: op. 8 (1923), op. 10 (1923/24) and op. 49 (1947/48). The first two were written in his radically expressive period. Since 1925 Petersen came back to a more mellow tonal language, always on the research of an "expression of the whole human being".
